Weekly Update

  • Reading: I’m on page 282 of 453 in my current book, “Catch-22”. I’ll admit, I’m not really that into it. I appreciate the humor and off-the-cuff writing style, but it’s not a book I look forward to picking up and reading. It’s more a book I read just to read a book. Whatever. I’ll get through it.
  • Cooking: WIN! I made really great dinners on Sunday and Monday night of this week. Both meals started with a warm grilled peach frisée salad with a goats cheese dressing. The salad had lovely contrasting flavors between the sweet of the peach and the more bitter/sour flavor of the goat cheese dressing. Plus it just looked really pretty. Sunday nights main course consisted of a grilled steak with blue cheese butter and a side of some sauteed shallots and mushrooms. I wasn’t thrilled with the way this turned out due to a small mishap with my grill (read: all the scraps that have been accumulating at the bottom of it caught fire) and my utter inexperience with both shallots and mushrooms. Monday nights main course worked out almost perfectly. I had had this sausage dish at Petit Robert two weeks ago that came served atop a cream sauce with roasted apples, and I was dead set on making something similar. So I combined a tried-and-true method for preparing pork tenderloin with my best guess at what I thought would make a good cream sauce. I chopped up a braeburn apple and tossed it in into the skillet I had browned the tenderloin in. Then I mixed in some heavy cream, brandy (i LOVE cooking with brandy), a little dijon mustard and let it reduce for about 15 minutes. It turned out to be just the flavor I was looking for and perfectly complimented the pork.
  • Exercising: 3 good work outs at the gym and 3 decent runs.
Sidenote: This is the first time this post has been late all year. Shame on me. Shame, shame shame.
