I’ve gotten quite good at the hot coffee, but I’ve never gotten satisfactory results from my attempts at making iced coffee at home.

This Week In Goals

As the image suggests, let’s start with food! My new dish of the week was grilled lamb cutlets with a basil sauce. I’ve cooked lamb once before, but this was a totally different flavor. My first lamb-cooking adventure was a slow roasted shank - very fatty, very heavy. The better cut, along with grilling instead of slow roasting it in it’s own fat, made this a much better summer dish. The basil sauce (a combination of fresh basil, pine nuts and balsamic vinegar) took the flavor in a totally different direction. I’d highly recommend giving this dish a try. It’s (of course) a Jamie Oliver recipe and he even has a step by step guide to preparing it on his website (link).

I continued my running blitz this week for a total of 12 miles. I’m planning on running a 5k in about a month and I think I’d like to gradually start building up to a higher mileage per run. My lifting has been confined to light dumbbell exercises, pushups and sit-ups. At this point, all I’m really missing from the gym is doing dips and squats. I think I’ll continue with this anti-gym trend until it gets too cold out for my liking.

I started two new books this week. Not sure why, but I felt compelled to start both at the same time. The first was The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway. I started reading it outside this past saturday and was constantly getting distracted, which made it challenging to keep up with the developing plot. The other book is one I’ve been wanting to read for a while. Let My People Go Surfing by Yvon Chouinard. It’s a fascinating look at Chouinard’s life and the life of his company, Patagonia. This book is a total deviation from everything I’ve read this year and I’m really enjoying it.

Calling Katie and Miles

Checking Huffington Post to find out who Obama’s running mate is

Watching courtneyc videos from Tanzania (so cool!)

Writing this post

Getting out of bed

Shower, dress

Disassembling a piece of IKEA furniture I need to return

Breakfast; cooking and eating

Getting to IKEA 15 minutes before it opens so I don’t wait in line behind every Pittsburgh college student

Running two other nondescript errands

Hopefully, back home by noon to do some work

They’re currently still developing their formulas and are offering beta packs starting at $10 where you can sample the chocolate and provide your feedback to influence the final product.

I was totally focused and productive this week! ‘Bout time! Here’s some specifics.

Exercising: I haven’t lifted in over two weeks, but I ran a lot this week. I’ve got a new route that I love. It’s just shy of three miles which is a about a mile further than what I had been running on a regular basis. And I finally found a way to use the exercise category as the visual to make these post less boring.

Food: For all my cooking talk, I actually only own three cookbooks. A Ratatouille cookbook Miles got me for fathers day this year, and two of Jamie Oliver’s cookbooks. In Jamie’s Dinners, he’s got a section of quick meals made with basic (in the mind of a professional chef) ingredients. I’ve made several of them before and loved them, so I decided to do two more this week. I made a parmesan breaded fish fillet with a cress salad, and chorizo and tomato omelette. Both were pretty good, but nothing too incredible.

Reading: Yes, I finally finished Catch-22. Guess I need to get a new book now.

Can you imagine anything more fabulous and relaxing than driving across the beautiful countryside in a convertible with friends eating the entire time and getting paid to do it?

I can’t.

WATCH THE TRAILER

Really looking forward to watching this series with Gwyneth Paltrow, Mario Batali, Mark Bittman, and Claudia Bassols on PBS in the Fall.

Two Olympic related photo series from The Big Picture. It's that time again?

Some weeks I get excited for this post. I feel utterly worked out, cooked out and read out. And I can’t wait to tell the world. Other weeks, I neglect tumblr, don’t cook at all, and never once open a book. Fortunately, the weeks where I fail with my goals have been few and (with the exception of the past two weeks) far between. I just completed my move, and am still settling in. There are still plenty of boxes, and as of right now, I still don’t have internet (thanks comcast).

I actually did alright with exercise, running three times, but didn’t do much in the way of cooking or reading. I’m so ready to get settled, and get back into more of a routine.

Last Week

I believe last week was probably the biggest fail towards my three goals this year. I’m between apartments right now. That’s my excuse. Not a very good one, but whatever. Here’s the damage toll:

Read zero pages in that book I’m reading, Catch-22.

Made zero new or noteworthy foods.

Went to the gym zero times, but I did run twice. Yay! A non-zero number for you.

How to be a Customer Service Ninja

How to be a Customer Service Ninja:
This consumerist article just proved invaluable. I’ve spent the last few days dealing with the many annoyances of moving. Transfering utilities, canceling insurances, forwarding mail, trying to figure out where all the packaging tape went, etc. The worst part of it all, without question, was trying to cancel my Verizon FIOS TV and internet service. Over the course of the last 2 days, I spent over 2 hours on hold and still hadn’t gotten a human being on the line! Within 20 minutes of when I read this article, I had it all taken care of.

Here’s a novel idea for you Verizon - why not just put a list of phone numbers for all your support centers and what they handle on your website? You could get rid of that customer frustration machine you’ve got answering the phone now, and you’d get much more efficient employees. They wouldn’t have to do the job the machine was supposed to do – route calls.

Last Week

Friends and random interneters, I’m moving. Thats right, for the sixth consecutive August I’ll be changing states. It was a streak I was hoping to end last year, but alas, it remains alive and well. On friday, I’ll be piloting a rental truck back to Pennsylvania and when the dust settles, I’ll be in a new apartment in the city of Pittsburgh. I’ll still be working for my beloved barbarians, but I will now be a permanent work-from-homer. That being said, I now return to the usual weekly update.

Reading - I’m on page 337 of 453 in Catch-22, BUT my copy is property of the Boston Public Library. Hmmm…what to do….

Cooking - Due to a mixup at the grocery store last week, I ended up with over a pound of fresh spaghetti. After one round of my favorite pasta bianco, I was ready to try some different things. So, I picked up some muscles and a small amount of shrimp and made two delicious seafood pasta dishes. I was surprised how cheap the muscles were. Not sure how much of that is due to my proximity to the ocean, but I plan to cook with them much more often.

Exercising - I canceled my gym membership saturday, on my second trip of the week. I only ran twice as well, so a little bit slackerly with this particular goal.

The Steelwood Chair - designed by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec...

The Steelwood Chair - designed by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec for Magis
